Proper Installation of Polywrap

As with any corrosion-protection system, proper installation is important to polyethylene encasement's success.  Care taken during installation is as important as the installation method itself  The few known failures of polywrap-encased Cast and Ductile Iron pipe have generally been due to improper installation or poor workmanship.

The ANSI/AWWA C105/A21.10 Standard outlines three methods of installing polywrap sleeving.  Methods A and B use polywrap tubes, and Method C uses polywrap sheets.

Method A uses one length of polywrap tube, overlapped at the joints, for each length of pipe.  Because installation is faster and easier, most utilities and contractors choose some form of Method A.

Method B uses a length of polywrap tube for the barrel of the pipe and a separate length of polywrap tube or sheet for the joints.  The national standard does not recommend Method B for bolted-type joints unless an additional layer of polywrap is provided over the joint areas as in Methods A and C.

In Method C, each section of pipe is completely wrapped with a flat polyethylene sheet.

We thank DIPRA for their permission in providing you with these installation instructions.
